BENNETT, Charles Frederick

Charles Frederick Bennett was born on the 11th of March 1884 in St Pancras, London to Charles Robert Bennett and Eliza Brown. Throughout his life his names were frequently reversed (Frederick Charles). Charles Robert Bennett was a Butcher at his marriage in 1874, a ‘Journeyman Baker’ in the 1881 census, a ‘Butcher’s Salesman’ in 1901 and a ‘Butcher’s Manager’ in 1911. Charles Frederick was a ‘Butcher’s Assistant’ in 1901 and a ‘Butcher’s Foreman’ in 1911. It is not clear whether or not they were working together. Four girls were born to Charles Robert and Eliza before Charles Frederick was born, but one, Alice, died in 1882 at the age of five.

Charles Frederick (with names reversed) married Gertrude Underwood in 1912 and a son, Arthur Frederick, was born in 1918. He enlisted at Mill Hill, Middlesex in the Essex Regiment, and his address at the time was Forest Gate, Essex. In October 1918 he was with the 8th (Cyclist) Battalion which had moved to Ireland in February 1918. He was presumably returning home on leave when he travelled on RMS Leinster on the 10th of October along with eight other Privates from the regiment. He did not survive the sinking nor was his body recovered. His name is recorded on the Hollybrook Memorial in Southampton.
